Sometimes the Greatest Gift Is Being Heard
We live in a world filled with voices—and yet an extraordinary number of people feel unheard.
We talk quickly. We scroll quickly. We answer quickly. Sometimes we are already preparing our response before the person in front of us has finished speaking.
But listening is different.
Listening says, “For these few minutes, you matter more than whatever is competing for my attention.”
That can be an extraordinary gift.
Think about the person who has lost someone they love and discovers that everyone has stopped asking how they are doing. Think about an elderly person who may go days without a meaningful conversation.
Think about someone experiencing homelessness who is regularly walked past but rarely asked anything about themselves.
Think about the coworker who answers “I'm fine” every morning because nobody has ever stayed long enough to hear the second answer.
Today's Matthew 25 Challenge is beautifully simple:
Listen with love.
Find one person today and give them your attention.
Ask how they're doing—and mean it. If they begin telling you something important, don't rush them.
Don't immediately turn their experience into your story.
Don't assume you need to solve whatever they tell you.
Just listen.
There is dignity in being heard.
There is healing in realizing that somebody cared enough to stay.
Matthew 25 teaches us to recognize Christ in the human being standing before us. Sometimes serving that person means providing food, clothing or shelter.
And sometimes it means giving them something increasingly rare: our presence.
So today, give somebody your ears.
Give them a few minutes.
Give them the freedom to tell their story.
You may never know how badly they needed someone to listen.
LOVE LOOKS LIKE THIS.
GET CAUGHT IN THE ACT.
LIGHT UP THE MAP.
