For people living in cars, vans, or other vehicles, nighttime can become a daily search for somewhere they will not be ticketed, told to leave, threatened, or placed in danger. That instability can make it harder to keep a job, care for children, attend appointments, or plan the next step toward housing.

What is safe parking?

Safe parking programs create designated places where eligible people living in vehicles can park overnight with clear rules and basic safety practices. Depending on the program, a host site may also connect guests with restrooms, outreach workers, case navigation, document recovery, employment help, or other community resources.

Why does a parking space matter so much?

A predictable place to sleep can reduce the constant disruption of moving from location to location. It can help a person protect their vehicle, keep a routine, arrive at work rested, maintain school routines for children, and begin addressing other barriers.
